OUR IMPACT

Bethlehem Children's Centre, Nairobi

The Challenge

Bethlehem Children's home is located in Nairobi County, Embakasi sub county, Umoja Division. It was started in 1990 by Miss Mary Gatembu who is from the local community in collaboration with the Kenya Government. The institution started as a feeding center catering for orphans and other destitute children due to HIV/Aids or other conflict in the Soweto area. The center has a primary school, community library and a rescue and rehabilitation center. The primary school has 337 students, all permanent residents. There is also a feeding program for the resident children and those in the neighbouring areas. Due to the large number of children in the center, the mabati classrooms were congested and the children share the little furniture there is.

The Intervention

Safaricom Foundation constructed one classroom for the lower primary through the Pamoja Initiative. There is also approval to construct a second classroom through the same initiative, championed under staff sponsor Irene Muhindi.

The Impact

The extra classroom has eased congestion in the children’s center. There is more room for the teacher to access the pupils and learning has now been made easy.
