Menya Centre in Marimanti
The Menya Centre is located in Marimanti, Tharaka, a semi-arid area where a majority of the population are peasant farmers.
Due to a lack of resources, the centre is a pool of information for the youth, who without any information or knowledge, are likely to be unemployed and then lapse into a drug-fuelled life. This is due to the lack of information on the negative effects of drugs and on how to earn a decent living.
Safaricom foundation has funded the centre for renovations, computers and computer software, printer, the purchase of magazines and newspapers, and the purchase of books and audio visual equipment. All this amounted to Kshs. 800,000 – Kshs. 720,000 by Safaricom and Kshs. 80,000 topped by a staff sponsor, Felix Gakuru (through the Pamoja initiative). Pamoja is an initiative by Safaricom where the staff get involved in projects that positively impacts the community.
Serving up to 50 people daily, the Menya Centre will host an ICT Centre that will host a facility of computer classes and certification, particular aimed to the less fortunate members of the society who cannot afford the high fees and high costs of living in urban areas that usually offer such opportunities. The ICT Centre will also offer internet services free of charge. Within this ICT Centre, will be the audio visual centre. Here, educational material, such as material on HIV AIDs, environmental protection and cultural materials.
Menya Centre will also house a library, where the latest books on primary-, secondary-, and college-level curriculum will be available, alongside any other relevant books, such as religion, inspiration and fiction books. The centre will also house newspapers and magazines to keep the visitors informed.
