About the project
The Challenge
The secondary school with a population of 146 students did not have a toilet in their school compound. They used toilets in the primary school which is about a kilometre away. This wasted their time especially when resuming their classes in between lessons and after breaks.
The school’s kitchen was a makeshift structure which was unhygienic threatening the health of both students and teachers. They used a lot of firewood which was costly to the school.
The Intervention
Safaricom Foundation constructed a modern kitchen and ablution block with 8 toilets for girls and 5 toilets for boys to promote hygiene in the school compound.
The Impact
The students have toilets within their school compound and now concentrate on their studies better with little time being wasted in between toilet breaks.
The modern kitchen is equipped by 2 energy saving jikos which have cut down what the school spends on energy.
